Q&A

Name.

SAM SCHONZEIT

Location.

CURRENTLY IN MARFA TX, FROM NYC.

What do you do?

TRY TO KEEP IT TOGETHER. I MAKE FILMS. I MAKE PAINTINGS. I PULL WEEDS. I RUN SLOWLY ON THE TREADMILL — NOW TRYING TO WORK UP TO A SPEED AND A DISTANCE. I GO TO FELDENKRAIS CLASSES IN A NEIGHBORING TOWN AFTER SWIMMING. I SOMETIMES TAKE CLANAZAPAM. I TRY TO SLEEP. I HAVE A POSTCARD SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE WHERE I SEND A UNIQUE CARD TO MY SUBSCRIBERS EVERY MONTH OFTEN IN A DIFFERENT MEDIUM AND SOMETIMES PERSONALIZED. A “CARD” ISN’T ALWAYS A CARD. I RIDE MY BIKE. I EAT. I DRINK.

When did you first know that you were meant to do what you do?

I AM STILL NOT SURE WHAT I AM DOING NOR THAT I AM MEANT TO DO IT. THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THAT I WANT TO DO AND I DO A LOT OF THINGS THAT I ENJOY. I ALSO POSSESS A FRAUGHT PSYCHE THAT QUESTIONS THE MEANINGFULNESS OF THE THINGS THAT I DO. I WANT TO SHARE PLEASURE WITH PEOPLE. IF THE THINGS THAT I DO CAN MAKE PEOPLE HAPPY THEN IT IS EASIER TO THINK THAT I WAS MEANT TO DO IT. I HAVE NEVER FELT THAT MAKING ART WAS SOMETHING I WAS MEANT TO DO, ONLY SOMETHING THAT I DID. MAKING A FEATURE FILM FELT LIKE DOING SOMETHING THAT I WAS MEANT TO DO BECAUSE IT INVOLVED AND UTILIZED SO MANY OF MY INTERESTS — FROM WRITING TO ANIMATING TO MUSIC TO ACTING TO CRITICISM TO DIRECTING.

Where is your favorite place to go for inspiration and why?

A TOO LONG WALK OR BIKE RIDE AWAY FROM PEOPLE, IN TREES, ON A MOUNTAIN. THE RHYTHMS OF NATURE CALM ME, OPEN MY MIND. ALSO: A LONG SOLITARY CAR RIDE. A NATURAL PHENOMENON THAT INSPIRES AWE. A CERTAIN TYPE OF FOCUS AND AMBIGUITY.

What ideas, books, people, films, artists, etc. are inspiring you personally or informing your work right now?

MOSHE FELDENKRAIS, DEEPAK CHOPRA, SPY NOVELS, MURDER MYSTERIES, AKI KAURISMAKI, PLAYING, ITERATION, HEARTBREAK.

Who are your favorite people to collaborate with and what does collaboration bring to your work?

I DON’T OFTEN COLLABORATE, SO IT’S A BIT HARD TO SAY. I HAVE BEEN ENJOYING COLLABORATING WITH ROB WEINER AND MEMBERS OF THE MARFA COMMUNITY ON A FEW PLAYS WE’VE PUT ON OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS. IT’S LESS ABOUT WHAT IT BRINGS TO MY WORK AND MORE WHAT IT BRINGS TO MY LIFE WHICH IS A FLEETING SENSE OF INTELLECTUAL VIGOR AND ENGAGEMENT.

Do you have any rituals or practices that help you get into the creative zone?

CONSISTENCY.

If you could collaborate with anyone in the world (living or dead) who would it be and what would you do together?

I WOULD COLLABORATE WITH THE WOMAN WHO IS BREAKING MY HEART ON A LIFELONG PROJECT OF LOVE AND FULFILLMENT. AS AN INITIAL PRODUCT, A BOOK OF SHARED JOKES AND ALTERNATE REALITIES THAT WE DEVELOPED OVER THIS PAST DECEPTIVELY LOVELY SUMMER.

What’s the most memorable dream you’ve had recently?

A PRESCIENT DREAM WHERE I WAS AT A PARTY TRYING TO MEET THE GIRL PERMEATING THIS INTERVIEW AND I COULDN’T FIND HER AND IMPLICIT IN THIS WAS THAT SHE WAS WITH SOMEONE ELSE.

Where are your favorite places to eat, drink, visit, or hang out in your city?

HOME OR MY FRIEND BOB’S WELL-POSITIONED AIRSTREAM WITH TERRIFIC VIEWS OF RANCHLAND AND HILLS. OR AT MY FRIEND BRIDGETT’S HOUSE WITH HER WELL-BEHAVED AND AFFECTIONATE ANIMALS THAT SHE TALKS TO IN THE MOST FASCINATING AND ENDEARING WAY.

What’s something that you haven’t experienced yet that you want to?

COMPLETE SURRENDER.

Tell us a secret.
